About neutering

In Hungary many people are still against neutering. Sometimes people even say that we animal welfare activists don’t like animals because we promote neutering. Well, here are a few reasons why we promote it:
It is good for your dog. Neutering helps to prevent certain diseases like mammary cancer, or helps to reduce the risk of getting that disease.
When a dog is brought to our shelter, we are obliged by law not to give the dog to anyone but his/her original owner in the first two weeks. After two weeks we, the organisation become the dog’s owner. And since we believe that responsible owners get their dogs (and cats!) neutered, it is only natural that we have them neutered.
We make it a rule that we should have as many of our dogs neutered as we can. Unfortunately we don’t have enough money to neuter each and every dog at the shelter, but we rehome all adult female dogs neutered, all dogs (male and female) who look purebred neutered, and when we rehome young female dogs (before the age when the operation could be performed) we make a contract with the owner and oblige him/her to have that dog neutered when she is old enough.
We have good reasons to do this. Many people would happily promise that he/she would always look after the dog and not let her get pregnant. But they usually cannot watch the dog 24/7, and the dog escapes just once, or a male dog finds his way into the garden, and there comes a litter of puppies.
Also, if a dog is purebred, or looks like one, many people tries to trick us into giving that dog away. They promise that they will not let the dog have sex, but many times these are just promises, and it turns out he/she just wanted a nice dog for little money, and then starts breeding and making money out of the dog and puppies.
So these are our reasons. If someone wants unneutered dogs, then my advice is to buy from breeders.
